In addition to mucilage, the blossom and leaves of the mallow contain essential oils, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins. This interplay of ingredients is said to have a wellness soothing, enveloping and mucous membrane-protecting effect.
The mallow is said to have a soothing, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and astringent effect due to its tannin content. The dried leaves and flowers are said to act as a tea for catarrhs of the respiratory tract, dry cough, hoarseness, sore throat and irritation of the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat.
